The American Education System - 1437 Words

The American education system, as we know it, has failed us, and more of our youth are becoming incarcerated at young ages. The educational system has taken a backseat when it comes to funding prisons; youths have chosen to live a life of crime, as education has become less substantial than money and resources allocated to prisons. Although television shows such as Lock Up or Lock Down expose the harsh realities of the wars that are ongoing in prison, the war on education has taken a substantial effect on young men and women, and has landed several youths to be housed among the general population, which is, essentially, more damaging to the youth than one can imagine. Those who are imprisoned at a young age (among adults) have higher chances of remaining in the incarceration system throughout the rest of their lives, or find themselves in danger of being attacked by older men and women. Youths who are charged as adults should not be housed in adult prisons. Rather than adding to the prison system, an estimated 245 million dollar a year â€Å"investment,† these young men and women need to be housed among each other in group homes or rehabilitation centers. Children who are tried as adults and sent to penitentiaries that house adults over the age of 18 years old pose as a threat to these young men and women. Purposes of the Dramatic Monologue in My Last Duchess by...

My Last Duchess by Robert Browning is a dramatic monologue spoken by the Duke Ferrari. It highlights the jealous and sadistic nature of his character and the weirdness that surrounds his late wife’s demise. A dramatic monologue is a kind of poem whereby a single fictional or historical character other than the poet is made to speak to a silent audience, in this case, only the main character is allowed to talk. The purpose of the monologue is to not to disclose the poet’s own ideas but the thoughts of the lead character in the poem. While describing the duchess, the Duke further reveals his scrofulous character by unconsciously contrasting it against her more admirable nature. Qualities in the duchess that the duke perceives as improper are, in fact, aspects of her character that humanize her and make her more compassionate to the reader. For example, the duke was flabbergasted at the duchess outlook on life, her joie de vivre, adage, She had a heart - how shall I say?/ too soon made glad (ll. 21-22). The duchess capability to take pleasure in the simplest aspects of life, such as a bowl of cherries, her white mule, or the sunset angered the duke and filled him with hate. He felt that he should be the only one to make her happiness, but he failed to do so because the simplest gestures of kindness or beautiful things could. The novel begins with a series of sentences that seem to come from a children’s reader, describing a house and the family that lives in the house the child wants to play but no one is available to play. Toni Morrison has a recurring struggle of self-identification and beauty standards. An example of this would be when Claudia is gifted a white doll that has blonde hair and blue eyes. According to Toni Morrison’s Character Claudia in The Bluest Eye â€Å"Adults, older girls, shops, magazines, newspapers, window signs — all the world had agreed that a blue-eyed, yellow-haired, pink-skinned doll was what every girl child treasured. â€Å"Here,† they said, â€Å"this is beautiful, and if you are on this day ‘worthy’ you may have it.† Claudia is explaining how confused she is because she does not see the same beauty that is forced on her with blonde hair and blue eyed white girls and baby dolls. She even goes so far as stripping the doll to its core which is a realization that the outside beauty meant nothing because the core was ugly. Something she was considered â€Å"worthy† of having she thought was ugly. Pecola suffers from low self-esteem issues from people calling her ugly and connecting her to negative and ugly things. â€Å"It had occurred to Pecola some time ago that if her eyes, those eyes that held the pictures, and knew the sights — if those eyes of hers were different, that is to say, beautiful, she herself would be different†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦ If she looked different, beautiful, maybe Cholly would be different, and Mrs. Breedlove too. Maybe they’d say, â€Å"Why, look at pretty-eyed Pecola. We mustn’t do bad things in front of those pretty eyes.† Pretty eyes. Pretty blue eyes. Big blue pretty eyes.†( The Bluest Eye) Instead of the traits, she has already, she wants to have Blue eyes. Blue eyes were considered beautiful just like the reference before made to the baby doll. Since the white people dominated the view of beauty, this is why she obsessed over Shirley Temple who had blonde hair and blue eyes. As a child star, she was amazing,†.(HuffPost). Claudia is the youngest child of the MacTeer family. She also endures the same issues of colorist and racist beauty standards as Pecola but she is too young to care. According to Toni Morrison’s Character Claudia in The Bluest Eye † I couldn’t join them in their adoration because I hated Shirley. Not because she was cute, but because she danced with Boj angles, who was my friend, my uncle, my daddy, and who ought to have been soft-shoeing it and chuckling with me. Instead, he was enjoying, sharing, giving a lovely dance thing with one of those little white girls whose socks never slid down under their heels. So I said, â€Å"I like Jane Withers.† Claudia is also the fighter and the rebel as far as going against the views of others. When she is gifted a baby doll that has blonde hair and blue eyes she doesn’t find it as beautiful as others do. Instead, Claudia picks it apart, this is because she is young and has not been able to truly understand self-hatred that the adults have. She is considered the hopeful character in the novel. Claudia is thrown into situations and has experienced different things which makes her mature but also a child and doesn’t know much about the world yet. Opposite of Claudia, Pecola has self-image problems and is a passive character. Unlike Claudia, Pecola did not grow up in a loving and caring home. Instead, she grew up in what is described and â€Å"ugly† family. Ugly in terms of disastrous home, features, and upbringing. Pecola values the blonde hair and blue eyed people and wants to have the same traits. Out of the two, Claudia is better able to reject white, middle-class America’s definitions of beauty. Pecola considers Shirley Temple as the perfects little girl. At the beginning of the book, Pecola’s love for her Shirley Temple cup opens the view of her fascination. â€Å"My mother was referring to was Pecola. According to Toni Morrison’s Character Claudia in The Bluest Eye â€Å"The three of us, Pecola, Frieda, and I, listened to her downstairs in the kitchen fussing about the amount of milk Pecola had drunk. We knew she was fond of the Shirley Temple cup and took every opportunity to drink milk out of it just to handle and see sweet Shirley’s face.† She gets in trouble for drinking all the milk, Claudia’s mother thinks she is being greedy but she just wants to use her cup at most. To Pecola Shirley Temple is who she wants to be, she considers herself ugly and she feels if she looked more like Shirley Temple. Where Pecola lives brings conceptual beauty standards such as blonde hair and blue eyes. Maureen symbolizes wealth in the black community. Her family were light skin and have money, she is also new to the neighborhood. According to Toni Morrison’s Character Claudia in The Bluest Eye â€Å"Maureen Peal. A high-yellow dream child with long brown hair braided into two lynch ropes that hung down her back. She was rich, at least by our standards, as rich as the richest of the white girls, swaddled in comfort and care. The quality of her clothes threatened to derange Frieda and me.† Both Shirley Temple and Maureen define the beauty that Pecola wishes she had. Shirley Temple is white with blonde hair and blue eyes and adored by America. Maureen is a beautiful light-skinned black girl with money. She blames her general feeling of separateness and unworthiness on her foot (111), which was the beginning of her self-hatred and distorted view of beauty and her race. Although she needs her parents’ care, she is left alone, and when she grows up, she becomes the nurturer of her younger brothers. She enjoys taking care of them but trembles with loneliness, dreaming someone will rescue her from total lonesomeness. â€Å"Fantasies about men and love and touching were drawing her mind and hands away from her work (113). † This line vividly exemplifies her fantasies for love. She meets Cholly Breedlove, and they soon fall in love. Her dependency on others, however, leads to tragedy. Cholly and Pauline move to Lorain, Ohio, to find Cholly a job. Cholly quickly gets used to the new circumstances. On the other hand, Pauline is left alone again and is teased by other women because of her typical black appearance and deformity. She tries to be the same as the other women, but she fails. As a result, she becomes more dependent on her husband. However, Cholly becomes sick of her dependency because he does not have the heart to understand the reason she behaves that way. The way Pauline copes with her inner problem is quite distorted. Since Pauline realizes that Cholly is not capable of fulfilling her desire for love, she goes to the movies to relieve her loneliness. By watching the movies, she absorbs the perspective of white beauty and starts to think that she and other blacks are ugly. The values portrayed in the movies are probably the most destructive ideas in the history of human thought (121). The situations depicted in the movies are unrealistic and would never occur in Pauline’s life, yet she starts to confuse reality and deny her own life. Without noticing how dangerous it is, she begins to lose her black identity. This situation becomes exacerbated in her working for the Fishers. When Pecola accidentally spills the pie, Pauline does not console her, but instead, behaves more like the white Fisher girl’s mother. Pauline finds satisfaction in defining herself as an ideal servant for a wealthy white family, just like in the film Ethnic Notion (Director), which explains that blacks are happy to devote themselves to whites, and this leads to a deep contradiction. In 1935, at just three and a half years of age, Shirley instantly became the number one box office sensation and held onto the title for four straight years; yet she remained successful way beyond those years. Men, women, and children adored her loving personality and innocence; she was a breath of fresh air in a time of hardships and struggles. During the Great Depression, less people went to the theaters because they could no longer afford the extra expense. Can War Ever be Justified? It is hard to think about the future of warfare without being terrified. The new weapons of war-nuclear, chemical, biological-will only get more lethal and more widely available. And the testimony of the worlds madmen and mad states suggests that once they possess such weapons, they will soon use them, or try to enslave the worlds free societies with their threats of mass killing. War inevitably brings death, destruction and suffering, which ruin lives and nations. Using, ethical theories religious guidance and general arguments to decide if killing and war can ever be justified. War in self-defence is an attempt to apply the philosophical principles of ethics to warfare seems, on the surface, to be oxymoronic. And yet, ethics do apply not only to the basis on which the conflict is waged but also to the policies that dictate how it is to be fought. The reasons why one nation enters into warfare with another reflect the ethics of the aggressor nation. The means by which a war is prosecuted by each participant is also established through decisions based on the ethics of the cultures of both nations at war.We must understand that a nations ethics in general, and any specific ethical position in particular, are an inescapable result of that nations worldview, of their epistemology (theory of knowledge) and, more specifically, of their understanding of the origin and nature of man. Just as everything else in life is affected by our worldview, our perspective on war and violence in general is likewise affected. A nation with a morality based on the perspective tha t man is made in the image of God would approach conflict differently than a  nation with a humanist worldview. For more than 17 centuries, the church and society in general have argued the validity of any specific conflict on the basis of several moral criteria. This concept, known by the Latin phrase justum bellum, has been debated in secular and religious circles. For instance, four of these criteria   were explored further in The Summa Theologica of St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274). Using these criteria, the conflicts purpose is evaluated as to whether it represents a just cause. Wars fought for a just cause are considered valid and moral. Those that fail to meet the criteria are condemned as immoral. The criteria for declaring a just war are many and varied. Several criteria address the treatment of innocent individuals under the regime against which violence is being used. Protecting the lives of innocents is a worthy moral objective. Regimes that commit human rights vi olations of the most flagrant and egregious kinds are generally recognized as being immoral regimes and, consequently, violent conflicts against such regimes being aimed at bringing an end to these atrocities are seen as justifiable. Through related reasoning, wars designed to prevent the future occurrence of atrocities are also considered justified, although not all people agree on the kinds of atrocities that rise to this level of justification. Pre-emptive strikes against a nation on the verge of committing crimes against innocents fall into this area and are also considered just cause actions. This is, of course, as long as there is sufficient compelling evidence of such impending crimes.Causes for war that are considered just also include a nations attempts to protect itself from invasion or warfare declared to reclaim lands and people captured by an enemy through  force. The protection and reclamation of personal property is second only to humanitarian concerns. This inclu des the assisting of a friendly nation in its efforts to protect itself, its people or its property, especially when there is a   preexisting alliance with that nation. As already mentioned, the just nature of conflict involves not only the reasons for which a war is declared (jus ad bellum) but also the means by which it is conducted (jus in bello). A war that is declared for just reasons but is prosecuted by unjust means is still considered an unjust war. A Utilitarian approach is The greatest good for the greatest number. This can be applied to the theory of Just War. For Utilitarians the end justifies the means. In other words, a country would not need a just war cause other than having the right intentions and making sure the war would produce the greatest good for the greatest number (Act rather than Rule). The idea of jus ad bello is to make sure that less evil will come about if the war is fought. Utilitarians would agree with the just war theory as war may be necessary to make the world a better place as long as the war was justified through just war. However can war be justified, you must look ahead to see what the consequences of a war will be if the war will have a greater overall benefit, thinking of future generations. This rule will give a different answer to each case: If a wars outcome will cause more suffering than good, Utilitarianism would say that that war could not be justified; yet if a war, in the long run would bring greater good than harm, Utilitarian thinkers will say that that war and killing can be justified. Of course, there have always been those who feel that all violence is immoral, regardless of its purpose. Some have tried to base this belief on one of the Ten Commandments, Thou shalt not kill (Exodus 20:13). On this basis, several groups have developed convictions leading to a conscientious objection to all war. Others have taken positions against such things as capital punishment on the same basis, while still others have tried to apply this commandment to personal defense, claiming that the use of deadly force is never justified. ,To a large extent, these arguments are based on a misunderstanding of the commandment in question. Hebrew is the language in which the Ten Commandments were originally written. Of the several Hebrew words that communicate the concept of killing, the term used in this commandment refers specifically to the murder of innocents, as demonstrated by its use again in Numbers 35:16-21. There is no biblical prohibition against what we know as justifiable homici de. Capital punishment is not only allowed but specifically affirmed in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible.

I Had to Fight to Read :: Personal Narrative, Autobiographical Essay

It was summer, stinking hot in a small town and I was fifteen and bored. The town librarian had been giving me grief since I was eleven and in the sixth grade, when she issued her first decree that I wasn't "old enough" to check out what became the first of a long line of books I had to fight to read. It was also the first of many times when one or both of my parents trudged down to the library to insist equally firmly that she had no right to restrict my choices as I had their permission to read whatever I wanted. The summer of my thirtieth year was especially difficult for this poor beleaguered woman. Her worst day came when I insisted on checking out all of Proust, every one of Thomas Wolfe's novels, and while I was at it, Joyce's Ulysses as well. After all, I reasoned, I had two weeks to keep these books and I was a fast reader. So I took them home, to the old iron glider under the grape arbor, and I propped myself up on a bunch of pillows and dug in with the same glee most people reserve for hot fudge sundaes. I fanned the pages and decided to read Look Homeward, Angel first because I like the way all those words leapfrogged over each other on every single page. Wow! The exuberant rush and gush of all those words! The torrent was overwhelming, the words blurred, I was losing the meaning. I knew I had to slow the pace somehow before I would have to admit that the librarian was probably right and perhaps I really wasn't "old enough" to make sense of it. And so I turned to Proust, finding relief within his exquisitely nuanced precision and pacing. My love of all things French was born with Proust, as I marveled at his privileged people and their luminous lives. Who were they really, I wondered, and was all of Paris like this, and if so, how soon could I get there? For the next two weeks, I cut back and forth between that unlikely duo, Wolfe and Proust, sweating from July's heat and the emotional impact of Brother Ben's death (best read when one is fifteen), then cooling off with the soothingly elegant rituals of Monsieur Swann and company.

So, no matter what age people adopt there is always the problems the children may develop to remember. Some children may not but majority of adopted children do because of what they have gone thru in life. Adoption Rates: National Council for Adoption states â€Å"Since 2007 – the number of overall adoptions has fallen, even as the total number of domestic infant adoptions has seen a small increase.† Drs. Placek and Jones report â€Å"the total number of all adoptions taking place in the U.S. has fallen, from a count of 133,737 adoptions in 2007 to 110,373 in 2014.† Adoption remains an important service for children in need of families in the U.S. Types of Adoptions: There are three different types of adoptions you can choose from which are Domestic adoption, Multi ethnic adoption and international adoption. Domestic adoption is when the couple wants to adopt the same culture and ethnicity. They prefer the child to look like them. Multi ethnic adoption is when the adopted family does not care what culture or ethnicity the child is that they are adopting. International adoption is adopting out of the country. Infants: People think adopting infants is the easiest way to go. Children adopted as babies experience almost continues care by the adoptive parents (Howe). Which is why people believe infants will not have behavioral problems or feel neglected later in life.   Although this stage is the most crucial in any infant’s life. When adopting, â€Å"the first months and years of life have been long regarded as crucial to later development; infancy is characterized by rapid neurological and behavioral development† (Julian 1). Children placed as babies have fewer developmental risked attached. Although physically, cognitively and educationally.   Adopted babies do as well as non-adopted children. Also, when taking an infant in you are the only person they know, and they are more willing to accept you as their parent. Toddlers: â€Å"Children placed after the age of 12 months appear at increased risk of more pronounced development impairments, again practically in the realms of the emotional, behavioral and social development† (Howe 223). When toddlers are adopted they are lacking cognitive and linguistic skills to understand the transitions. Some toddlers even join adoptive family in the state of anger, fright, or grief. Howe states â€Å"children who join adoptive families after the age of 1 or 2 will normally have developed a clear-cut attachment with their biological mother prior to being placed.† Teens: Adopting at an older age can be hard for the child and adopted family. As a teen they may have been neglected, or not feeling loved so they don’t want to open themselves up to the adopted family. Just being placed can be a big change for them. Howe states â€Å"Older placed children experience at least one major change of caregiver when they join their adoptive family.† Also, when adopted at an older age they can have already went thru things such as going from home to home or being abused. Howe states â€Å"older placed children typically have pre-placement histories of adversity deprivation, neglect, rejection and abuse.† When deciding to adopt just remember it does not matter the age. The child will be grateful in the end that you give them unconditional love that their biological parents could not do for them. Adopting can be a long process that takes months to possibly a year or two. Although it will be worth it in the end. It is another person to give your love to plus making your family bigger.
